Directions for filling out the Electricians Certification Application

PERSONAL INFORMATION

Using printed writing, fill in the following: last name, first name, middle initial, other names as electrician, drivers license #, state where drivers license was issued, and birth date. Fill in your mailing address, including city, county, state, zip. Fill in the day and evening phones, including area codes.

If you are an Inside wireman, check the box for "General Electrician" within the "Type of Certification Examination Requested" box.

Place a check in one of the four boxes below where it says: "(a) Proof of experience as required under CCR 8, Ch. 2, Part IV, Section 291.1 of the regulations." Then sign where it says "Signature" and fill in the date.

PROOF OF EXPERIENCE

If you have a Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship by the State or Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, and you checked the box indicating that a copy of your Apprenticeship certificate is your proof or experience, attach a copy to your application. (DO NOT STAPLE)

If your Apprenticeship Certificate is NOT readily available (DO NOT SPEND A LOT OF TIME TRYING TO FIND IT), or you never completed an apprenticeship, just check box # 2 where it says "On-the-job experience [per the regulations 291.1(a)(2)]" and then fill out "Box 1" on page 2. Do not enter more than the maximum credit hours listed for any category in "Box 1" in the "your hours" column or your application will be turned down. For example: In the Commercial Wiring row you may not enter more than 6000 hours; in the Underground Conduit Installation row you may not enter more than 750 hours. In other words you cannot use more hours to qualify than is listed on each row.  Your total may be well above 8000 hours but you cannot exceed the credit in each category for the purpose of qualifying. Of the Applications that have been turned down, most were because they entered more than the maximum credit hours in the “your hours” column.

The State is using the honor system.  By signing your name on page 1 you are signing under penalty of perjury that you have a minimum of 8,000 hours in the trade.  (There will be no follow up by the State anytime in the next year or two.  Eventually they will do a random check of records.  If you are selected for a random check, your Union Dispatch records will be accepted by the State as proof of your 8,000 hours.)

Another problem is that some people are not signing their name on the application.

A copy of a State Electrical License from another State may satisfy experience requirements, but you must still take the exam.
